The Client’s Challenge

The Ho Chi Minh City manufacturer had been operating a tube mill for three years, producing stainless steel round and square tube for the domestic furniture and interior decoration market. As Vietnam’s hospitality and commercial interior sectors expanded, high-end hotel and retail projects began requiring consistent mirror-finish tube for lobby railings, bar counters, and decorative frames — a finish grade the factory could not reliably produce with its existing single-head semi-automatic polishing setup.

Three specific problems were costing the factory both revenue and reputation:

Finish inconsistency between batches. The existing semi-automatic machine relied on operator skill for abrasive belt pressure and tube feed speed. On mirror-finish orders, surface Ra values varied between 0.08 μm and 0.22 μm across a single production run — wide enough for the client’s hotel procurement inspectors to reject batches.

Square tube corner quality. The factory’s existing machine was designed for round tube only. Square tube corners were polished manually with angle grinders — a time-intensive process that produced visible corner/face discontinuities unacceptable for visible interior applications.

Throughput bottleneck. The factory’s tube mill was producing approximately 2,200 meters per day, but polishing capacity was capping finished output at 900–1,100 meters per day. The polishing line was the binding constraint on revenue.

The factory’s requirement: an automatic polishing machine capable of handling both round and square profiles, achieving consistent mirror finish with Ra ≤ 0.10 μm, at throughput sufficient to match the tube mill output rate.

Why MaxDo Was Selected

The factory evaluated four polishing machine suppliers — two from Foshan, one from Zhejiang, and one from Taiwan.

Profile flexibility was the deciding factor. The Taiwan supplier offered the highest-specification machine for round tube, but did not offer square tube polishing capability in the same configuration. The Zhejiang supplier offered a combined round/square machine but required a 30-minute profile changeover — too slow for a factory running both profile types on the same shift.

MaxDo’s proposal addressed the changeover constraint with a quick-adjust contact roller system allowing round-to-square profile switching in under 8 minutes, with no tooling change required for tube OD/face width within the machine’s design range (12–51 mm round, 20×20–50×50 mm square).

The factory also requested mirror-finish sample testing before purchase. MaxDo ran a test polishing session at the Foshan factory on the buyer’s own SS 201 tube samples (25.4 mm OD, 0.8 mm wall), achieving Ra 0.06 μm on mirror finish and consistent Hairline grain direction on three consecutive sample tubes. The samples were shipped to Vietnam for the client’s customer approval before the order was placed.

Equipment Configuration

5-Head Automatic Polishing Machine

  • Profile capability: Round tube OD 12–76 mm; Square/rectangular 20×20–60×60 mm (with 4-face simultaneous polishing)
  • Abrasive belt grit sequence (Mirror finish): 120 → 180 → 240 → 320 → Buffing compound
  • Abrasive belt grit sequence (Hairline finish): 180 → 240 → 320 (3-head operation, heads 4–5 idle)
  • Infeed speed: 2–7 m/min (steplessly adjustable via VFD)
  • Contact pressure: Pneumatic belt tensioning, individually adjustable per head (0.2–0.8 MPa)
  • Square tube corner treatment: Oscillating corner polishing attachment on heads 3 and 4 (standard configuration)
  • Tube rotation (round mode): Motorized V-roller rotation, auto-adjusted by OD
  • In-feed/out-feed: Full motorized roller conveyor system, auto-alignment guide rails
  • Control system: PLC with touchscreen HMI; stores 20 product presets (OD, speed, pressure per profile)

Vietnam-specific logistics notes:

  • Equipment imported via Cat Lai Port (Ho Chi Minh City); customs clearance handled by client’s freight forwarder with MaxDo HS code documentation
  • Import duty on metalworking machinery classified under relevant HS heading; client confirmed 0% preferential duty under ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA)
  • Power supply at factory: 380V / 50Hz / 3-phase — matched to MaxDo standard configuration without electrical modification

Timeline:

ФазаПродолжительность
Manufacturing at MaxDo (Foshan)42 days
Factory Acceptance Test (FAT)2 days (client representative attended)
Sea freight (Foshan → Cat Lai Port)5 days
Customs clearance and inland transport4 days
Machine installation3 days
Trial production and commissioning3 days
Total: order to first production~59 days

The short sea freight time (Foshan to Ho Chi Minh City) is a structural advantage for Vietnamese buyers sourcing from Guangdong-based suppliers — transit time is approximately 4–6 days versus 18–22 days for Indian buyers using the same FOB Guangzhou terms.

During commissioning, the MaxDo engineer calibrated the square tube corner oscillation amplitude and frequency for the factory’s 40×40 mm square tube (the highest-volume profile), achieving consistent corner finish that matched the flat face Ra value within 0.02 μm — eliminating the visible corner/face boundary that had been the primary defect on the factory’s manual-polished square tube.

Production Results After 60 Days of Operation

Throughput: The factory achieved 2,100–2,300 meters per day on Hairline finish (two-shift operation), fully matching and slightly exceeding tube mill output. Mirror finish production runs at 1,400–1,600 meters per day due to the additional buffing stage and reduced line speed.

Surface finish consistency: Mirror finish Ra measurements across 10 consecutive sample tubes from the same production run averaged Ra 0.072 μm with a maximum variation of ±0.009 μm — within the hotel project inspector’s specification of Ra ≤ 0.10 μm. The factory has had zero surface finish rejections from the hotel client since machine startup.

Profile changeover: The round-to-square changeover procedure (saved as a preset in the HMI) is being completed in 6–9 minutes in practice — within the factory’s target of under 10 minutes, allowing mixed-profile production days without significant lost time.

Operator count: 2 operators per shift — one managing infeed loading and HMI monitoring, one managing outfeed collection and bundling. The previous semi-automatic + manual polishing process required 4–5 workers for the same output level, at lower quality.

The Vietnam Market Context

Vietnam’s stainless steel market reached approximately USD 654.8 million in 2024 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.3% through 2033, driven by construction, manufacturing, and infrastructure development. The steel pipes and tubes segment alone is projected to surpass USD 4.13 billion by 2030 across all material grades, with stainless steel decorative tube demand growing in step with Vietnam’s expanding hospitality, retail, and residential construction sectors.

For Vietnamese tube manufacturers, upgrading polishing capability to mirror finish is a direct path to higher-margin hotel and commercial interior projects — a market segment that is currently constrained by the limited number of domestic producers able to supply consistent BA/mirror finish at production scale.

Frequently Asked Questions from Vietnamese Buyers

Can MaxDo ship directly to Cat Lai Port or other Vietnamese ports?
Yes. MaxDo regularly ships to Cat Lai (Ho Chi Minh City), Hai Phong, and Da Nang ports. The logistics team coordinates with freight forwarders experienced in Vietnam customs documentation requirements.

Is ACFTA preferential duty applicable to MaxDo’s polishing machines?
Most metalworking machinery exported from China to Vietnam qualifies for ACFTA preferential tariff rates (Form E certificate of origin required). Buyers should confirm their specific HS code with their customs broker. MaxDo provides Form E documentation as standard.

What abrasive belts are available locally in Vietnam?
Standard abrasive belt dimensions (100 mm width, common circumferences) are available from local distributors of brands such as 3M, VSM, and Klingspor in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. MaxDo provides a belt specification sheet listing exact dimensions and mineral type for each head so buyers can source locally after the initial belt set is consumed.
